Manas National Park
Manas National ParkManas National Park The park is spread over 520 sq. km of Assams Barpeta district, with its core restricted to 360 sq km. Apart from conservation initiatives taken up for Project Tiger, Manas is a secure habitat for rare species like the Hispid Hare, Pigmy Hog, Golden Langur, Indian Rhinoceros and the Asiatic Buffalo. Other wild animals that roam its forest are elephants, Leopards, Clouded Leopard, Himalayan Bear, Wild Boar, Sambar, Swamp Deer, Hog Deer Manas too is the destination for a host of migratory birds in winter, which include the White-capped Redstars, Forktails, Cormorants and the Ruddy Shelduck. The park also has a prolific population of the Indian Hornbill and the Great Pied Hornbill. The park is accessible from Guwahati the distance of 176 km can be covered in approximately three hours. Barpeta at a distance of 40 km is the nearest railhead for Manas. |
