Dampa Tiger Reserve
Dampa Tiger ReserveDampa Tiger Reserve - The Dampa Tiger Reserve
stretches for 550 sq km in the Mamit district of Mizoram, its eastern
boundaries touching the international border with Bangladesh. Apart from
supporting a variety of wild life, the dense evergreen forests merging
into the deciduous forests give sustenance to a wonderful array of
flora. The Dampatlang and Chhawrpial forests of this Tiger Reserve have an appealing landscape, with variations like steep hills and deep valleys, salt licks and jungle streams at an altitude ranging between 200 to 800 metres. Bamboo and orchids are aplenty, with a whole range of woody shrubs, jasmine flowers, chapalish and plum trees. Seven varieties of primates stalk the forests of Dampa, with tigers, elephants, gaur, Serow, Barking Deer, Porcupine, Sloth Bear and Himalayan Bear in fair numbers. The delightful Indian Hornbill, Malbar Pied Hornbill, Peacock Pheasant, Red Jungle Fowl, Crested Serpent Eagle, Emerald Dove and Hill Myna are some of the birds nesting in large numbers at Dampa. Dampa can be visited any time of the year, with the weather being fairly pleasant throughout. The winters can get quite chilly, but are ideal for treks into the park. The Sanctuary can be accessed from W.Phaileng, Teirei or Phuldungsei, which are 100 km, 119 km and 142 km respectively from Aizawl, the nearest airport and state capital. |
