: Hampi : Islamic Quarter of Hampi
Islamic Quarter of HampiTalarigatta Gate: This arched gate served as
the entrance to the city from the riverside. Though partially damaged,
the remains imply that a stately monument probably existed. Its name
suggests that a toll was levied here for entry into the city. A small
shrine dedicated to Lord Hanuman can also be seen here. Ahmed Khans Mosque and Tomb: Ahmed Khan was a high ranking officer in the Vijayanagar court, and a tomb and mosque was built in his honor. The semicircular dome and the prayer niche confirm that this was built a mosque, though the rest of its architecture hints of Hindu and Jain styles. Vishnu Temple: Built with granite on an elevated platform, the temple stands out for its fluted base and pillared columns in contrast to the images of deities on the walls of other temples. Another shrine has been built on an adjoining boulder which also reflects the influence of Jain architecture. |
