Forts of Rajasthan - The Rajput warriors, known for their patriotism and valor built high citadels to protect their territories and their heritage from invaders. At the same time, they were patrons of art and architecture.

The need to fortify their territories led them to construct some of the most formidable forts which stretch across present day Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. The Mughal style of architecture has a heavy bearing on Rajasthan’s monuments.

The forts of Rajasthan follow a complex plan, using fortified walls and moats, with some like the Amber and Mehrangarh Fort enclosing some intricately adorned structures within. Locally available material like yellow and red sandstone has been used to build these structures.

Some forts like the Jodhpur Fort are situated within the city, while some cities like Jaisalmer, Chittorgarh and Bikaner are fully protected by high walls.
