Karla Bhaja Caves

The Karla and Bhaja Caves can also be added to this itinerary. The Bhaja caves are near Malavali station, and can be visited before you start your trek up to Lohgad. There are 14 stupas and 18 caves, including a Chaitya hall with fine carvings within the cave. The caves are believed to have been carved out in 200 B.C.

14 km from the Bhaja caves, the rock cut Buddhist caves at Karla boast of a Buddha figure, a 37 pillar aisle and carved elephant heads. The large Chaitya hall here has a unique arched roof supported by wooden pillars. Dating back to 80 BC, the Karla caves are enveloped in a thick cover of green, and a calm air prevails. The Ekvira temple is located outside the caves.
